I was recently at the humungous Global Pet Expo in Orlando, Florida and in what was the equivelent of 16 football fields of vendors, one thing really struck me. Holy Dinah! There are a LOT of dog biscuit companies are out there.
However it wasn't at Global Pet Expo that I connected with Northern Biscuit Bakery. It was through Twitter in fact. A few emails back and forth and before too long, I had three bags of their product and two brochures explaining what they're all about. (and by the way, who ever designs their marketing materials is very talented) This company to me really stands out in the massive doggie biscuit "world".
Some of the key features of their biscuits and their company are:
- Slow-bake method. The biscuits are formulated to be hard and crunchy to aid in maintaining healthy, white teeth. (Oscar likes to have white teeth to impress the "ladies" at the dog park)
- They use locally sourced healthy ingredients. They have partnered with local mills, growers and suppliers. This is on their brochure: "Buying locally helps us all, from the farm to the doggie dish". I LOVE that!
- They have a variety of biscuits that are formulated for specific needs. Shiny Coat. Calm. Fresh Breath (Oscar could really use that, given he sometimes eats cat poop) Hip and Joint.
- Now this really impressed me, having worked in the past with people with intellectual disabilities. The company uses the services of their local Community Living Ontario office, employing individuals to affix the labels unto their bags. They love the excellent work they do for them and in turn these people grow. It's a win-win. This company not only makes incredible biscuits, they have wonderful values.
The variety of biscuit flavors, and by that I mean ingredients, are so impressive! There are 12 in total, including Smoked Fish and Blueberry, Canadian Bacon with Blueberries, Peanut Crunch and Oscar's new "addiction", Pumpkin Pie. I have never in all of my pet blogging years seen such gourmet doggie biscuits. Gourmet but with purpose.
